Frequently Asked Question

Also known as Fitzpatrick skin type, it is basically telling how dark your skin is, its level of melanin and what settings the technician needs to use for your skin. The determination of your skin type is the first and most important step in any laser skin or hair reduction procedure, because almost all the settings are based on that. You might want to write down the type at each place you visit to see how they differ.

Depending on your skin type certain laser treatment machines will either burn your skin or just won’t do you any good. What you should expect is an explanation of the quality of treatment. There are many machines for each type of skin, so there could be a case when experienced technician can give you better laser skin treatment on the available laser machine than someone with three hours of the training on the best machine ever. It takes two (machine and technician) to get the best result, so keep that in mind.

Depending on the settings – speed, intensity and pain numbing gel applied before treatment your experience will vary. Note, however, that if it doesn’t hurt – you’re doing it wrong. There are, of course, cases, when laser treatment goes lightly on you, but it is not the rule. Your skin should give you some feedback, so if you are treated for the first three times and you don’t feel anything – chances are the technician isn’t killing follicles, but just burning hair on the surface. Which means you will keep coming back for treatments again and again.

Depending on the procedure, your skin type and amount of hair the after-effects could vary drastically. Ask and compare.

Ask what happens if you get burned (it is usually pretty obvious right away). Does the place have any cream or solution for burned skin? Will the doctor prescribe something or can they administer it right away? Things happen, so be cautious, pay attention to answers.

Basically, the hair never goes away completely. After proper laser hair treatment the growth of hair is reduced dramatically and the remaining hair cannot be removed by laser anymore because it gets too light. However, some touch ups might be needed, depending on your individual skin and hormonal features. The way you will respond to treatments should tell your laser technician the outcome.
To conclude – please don’t forget that laser hair removal or reduction, laser skin treatment and other laser-administrered procedures can greatly damage your skin. It is in the hands of the technician who is treating you to give you either a smooth silky skin or burned and damaged one. You have to work with your technician to achieve the best results based on your individual skin features.

The Erbium laser has been designed to remove or noticeably decrease wrinkles and to improve the overall colour and skin texture of the face, neck and hands. Occasionally, additional treatments may be recommended to further enhance your results. Although treatment results will vary depending on various considerations, with few exceptions, you can expect an improvement in the texture and quality of your skin.

The laser light is absorbed by the water in your skin cells. The absorption in turn causes the instantaneous vaporization or destruction of the cell. As your physician passes the laser light over your skin, a mere 30 millionths of an inch of tissue is removed at a time. This incredible control allows your physician to treat only as deeply as needed, from removing wrinkles to merely refreshing your overall skin appearance. After the damaged skin is removed, new skin quickly regrows in its place.

The level of discomfort is different for every person and also varies by the location and surface area to be treated. Many patients do not request any pain medication during treatment and relate the discomfort as comparable to a sunburn. Other patients will appreciate a topical or more extensive anesthetic. Your physician will discuss your options with you based upon your own tolerance and the specific areas to be treated. Laser resurfacing may cause the skin to become raw, red or pink with mild to moderate discomfort for several days following the procedure. Although over the counter medication is usually sufficient, your physician may recommend alternative pain relief options to keep you comfortable.

Depending on your specific treatment, your physician will prescribe detailed skin care instruction. To avoid the risk of infection and to ensure a positive result, please follow these instruction carefully. After you have healed, you will need to continually protect your new skin. In the early weeks and months following treatment, your skin will be very susceptible to sun damage. If at all possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. If you must be in the sun for a short time, please use sunscreens recommended by your physician.

Remember, one of the reasons you are probably considering laser resurfacing is because of the long-term damaging effects the sun has had on your skin.

Although the Erbium laser has substantially reduced the risks associated with laser procedures, infection, temporary or permanent pigmentary changes, even scarring or other unsatisfactory results can occur. As with any medical procedure, be certain to thoroughly discuss any questions or concerns you may have with your physician.

Of course, everyone will heal at various rates depending on the depth of treatment, the particular areas treated and your own healing rate. Noticeable results are typically seen in few weeks. Light resurfacing around the eyes and lips in general takes only a few days. Most patients can be treated before the weekend and be almost completely healed by the following Monday. A deep full facial resurfacing may take up to 2-3 weeks before you feel aesthetically comfortable to return to your normal activities. Areas further away from your face, such as hands, may take up to a month for the full treatment benefits to become apparent.
